When visiting Charlotte, North Carolina, viewing Uptown’s various murals is a must! A few of them are tricky to find, but well worth the adventure. I went to Charlotte with my grandma and we used Clio’s interactive map to find all of Uptown’s murals. It was a godsend. Check out the site for more information about each mural and the artists who created them.
Uptown’s murals are on buildings just off one of Charlotte’s main streets, Tryon. This guide will start at the southwesternmost mural between 3rd and 4th Street, and work its way northeast up Tryon to 11th Street. You could easily view all murals within an hour. Or, do what my grandma and I did – make an afternoon of it and stop along the way to take in more of the city, grab lunch, or read Charlotte’s historical plaques and signs.
Mural by McMonster
Location: Between 3rd and 4th Street, on the northwest side of Tryon Street, look for an alley with strings of lampshades overhead. Keep walking to the end and you’ll see the grayscale mural by McMonster.

Fly Girl
Location: Look for the First Citizens Bank building on the north corner of 4th and Tryon. Walk northwest on 4th Street until you are just past the First Citizens Bank Plaza steps at the rear entrance. You’ll see “Fly Girl”, by Sloane Siobhan on the wall of the parking structure.
I think I stared at this mural the longest. It’s absolutely gorgeous in person.

Queen City
Location: On the east corner of 5th and Tryon, look for a bar called The Local. The “Queen City” mural, by Matt Hooker and Matt Moore, is on the side of the building that faces 5th Street.

Mother of Invention
Location: On the north corner of 6th and Tryon you’ll see Rosalia Torres-Weiner’s “Mother of Invention” mural on the southwest side of the Discovery Place Science building.

Strange Fruit
Location: At the south corner of 7th and Tryon you’ll find “Strange Fruit”, by Dammit Wesley, on the southwest side of the Duckworth’s Grill & Taphouse building.
I loved this mural. It was so bright and vibrant!

Reach for the Moon
Location: After viewing “Strange Fruit”, turn on 7th Street and head southeast. Look for the first alley after the Duckworth’s building and you’ll see Caitlin McDonagh’s “Reach for the Moon”.

Man Feeding the Poor
Location: Keep heading southeast on 7th Street and just past “Reach for the Moon” you’ll see “Man Feeding the Poor” by Allen Carter.

Perspective
Location: Head southeast even further on 7th Street. On the same building as “Man Feeding the Poor” is “Perspective” by Duarte Designs. Stay on the same side of the street as the mural to look up and take in its vertical orientation. Then, walk across the street to see the mural in its entirety.

Back to the Future
Location: From “Perspective,” walk northwest up 7th Street, cross Tryon, and go past St. Peter’s Episcopal Church toward Church Street. At the south corner of 7th and Church will be “Back to the Future” by Alex DeLarge.
This was the most difficult mural for my grandma and I to find. Turns out we just didn’t walk far enough up 7th Street during our first few attempts.

Delight in Dancing
Location: From 7th Street, walk northeast on Tryon until you reach 10th Street. “Delight in Dancing”, by Pichiavo, is on the side of the Charlotte Ballet building that faces 10th Street.
This was my favorite mural!

Mural by Sebastian Coolidge
Location: On the other side of Tryon from 10th Street you’ll see the parking lot for the Visual and Performing Arts (VAPA) Center, home to Sebastian Coolidge’s mural that spans the front of the building.

Mural by Nick Napoletano
Location: From the VAPA Center, head toward the AerialCLT building at the north corner of 11th and Tryon to view the northeasternmost Uptown mural. On the side of the building facing 11th street is Nick Napoletano’s work featuring portraits of seven women.

I hope this guide comes in handy during your trip to Charlotte!
